The Wall is an urban infill project that responds to the hostile and exclusionary boundaries surrounding the Lincoln Centre in New York City. San Juan Hill was a dynamic community that preceded the site that faced the violence of urban removal. It had a rich social fabric, with space that were often appropriated for various uses - Jazz clubs in the basement, kindergartens in tenement apartments, making spaces through the objects, rituals and performances of the space. This intervention acts as a resistance, shown through performance in the oppositional aesthetics of San Juan Hill, exploring modes of indigeneity through rituals and practices of inhabiting and using spaces. It activates the back wall of the MET Opera, programatically mirroring it to support public programs and provide opportunity for underrepresented artists and art forms.
The richness of San Juan Hill formed through performance and organic social practices of the space. Forceful removal of the community a violent act of erasure and alienation from the space.
