Rust holds a negative connotation as sign of material degradation, in typical building maintenance, preventing it is top priority. Exploring this tension, material exploration of rust as a joinery method takes inspiration from steel bolts that "fuse" over time with rust. The joint is made between steel sheets with a threaded rod connector, with threaded imprints that hold pieces in place, and fused together with its own rust. This joinery is considered at a larger scale and a small intervention is designed, a bus stop along Cayuga Lake.
Steel sheets provide shelter, direct views into nature and are rusted in place through time and weathering on site. Rather than moisture as the enemy, it harnesses it to maintain itself. The structure integrates itself into the environment through water cycles that produce this rusted patina.
